© Glencoe Mirror Glencoe, Oklahoma July 6, 1934 George Richmond Rice August 27, 1842 ~ July 1, 1934 George R. Rice Died Sunday Afternoon As one "who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to sleep," so died George Rice on Sunday afternoon at 2:30. He had been "going down the valley" for several days; all that loving hands and medical skill could do had been done and the only question was, when. The end came peacefully. The funeral was held at the Christian Church in Glencoe in the presence of the family and a host of friends. Only one of the few remaining members of the soldiers of the Union army with which he marched, was able to be present, H. N. Hadley. The quartet, consisting of Mrs. F. P. Jones, Mrs. F. S. Stephens, Roy Cummins, and J. E. Cannon, with Mrs. R. B. Skidgel at the piano, rendered "America," "Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me," and "When the Silver Cord Is Broken." The pallbearers consisted of J. M. Anderson, S. H. Price, T. E. Peters, O. T. McCormack, Henry Chappell, and C. B. McCubbin. Rev. L. L. Roach, Pastor of the Christian Church at Stillwater, had charge of the service. The scripture reading was from certain portions of John:14, and his discourse was one of the most pleasing and consoling heard here upon such an occasion. The remains were buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. [Reference: Page 363, TRIBUTES OF BLUE, by Pearcy and Talkington, 1996.] |
Glencoe, Oklahoma Friday, August 9, 1940 1861 ~ December 16, 1980 Mrs Emma Rice, t9, died at her home in Glencoe last Thursday. She had been suffering for a long time and her death was not a surprise. She had been tenderly cared for by her children and will be sadly missed by all, for she was a kind, loving mother and grandmother, always ready to sacrifice for the sake of others. She leaves three sons: Ben of Norman; Ray of Stillwater and Thomas of Glencoe, and three daughters, Mrs Alice Stephens of the home; Mrs Carrie West of Pasadena, Calif, and Mrs Lena Carr of Norman. Other survivors include 21 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters, besides unnumbered friends who love her. She was a firm believer of the Seventh Day Adventist faith and a minister of that church from Guthrie delivered a splendid funeral sermon Sunday at 2:30 in the Christian church. A quartet composed of Mrs J. W. lewis, Mrs J. W. Kincaid, Roy Cummins and Roy Burkhart with Mrs Roy Burkhart at the piano, sang beautiful hymns and the body was laids to rest in the IOOF cemetery. |
