Elsie Lea Dean Smith, longtime Cushing resident, passed away Friday, Sept. 22, 2006 in the Resthaven Nursing Home at the age of 79 years.
The daughter of the late William C. Craig and Avis A. Bailey Craig, Lea Dean was born on November 5, 1926 in Signal Hill, TX. She came to Cushing with her parents and family and was reared and educated here, attending Happy Valley School.
She was united in marriage to J. W. Johnson on February 8, 1943 and to this union five children, Marilyn, Cleo, Leora, Terry and Beverly were born. She married John Vernon Smith on Dec, 28, 1995.
Lea Dean spent many years babysitting and care giving. She then went to work in Stillwater for her daughter in her cake and candy shop, Art and Marilyn’s Makins for many years.
She was a member of the New Hope Fellowship Church.
She enjoyed collecting dolls, Avon bottles and for many years had done sewing for all of her family.
She is survived by her children, Marilyn McFarlin and her husband Art of Stillwater, Cleo Johnson and his wife Dawna of Cushing, Leora Barrows of Cushing, Terry Johnson and his wife Charlotte of Chickasha and Beverly Sneed and her husband Richard of Land’O Lakes, FL; 25 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by two sisters and one great-grandson.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006 at 2 P.M. in the Fairlawn Cemetery with Pastor Stephen Orton, of the New Hope Fellowship Church, officiating.
