Zelma Irene Salley, longtime Cushing resident, passed away early Wednesday morning, Sept. 28, 2005, at her home in Cushing at the age of 95 years.

A loving Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother and Great-Great-Grandmother, Zelma was born on April 26, 1910, in Pauls Valley, OK to Robert and Rebecca Payne. Early in her life, she lived on the family farm with her 14 brothers and sisters.

She met her husband, George O. Salley, while working on the farm in the summer of 1926. A year later, on July 4, 1927, the couple was married during a ceremony in Lindsey, OK. While she worked as a nurse’s aid and a cook, her greatest calling was caring for and nurturing her family.

Throughout her life, her spiritual strength and faith in God was an inspiration to many. She was a lifetime member of the Church of Christ and had belonged to the Church of Christ in Cushing since 1975.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years; one daughter Virginia Lou Salley; one son G.W. Salley and her 14 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her daughters Violet Swafford and husband Charles, Helen Richardson, Jean Welch and husband Don, Margie Roe and husband Wayne, Sue Wilson, Joyce Adams and husband Bill, Joann Frye and husband Mel, Gloria Collard, Sherry Hadley and husband Doug, Linda Pinkerton and husband P.J. and Donna Watkins and husband Danny; sons Glenn Salley and wife Midge and Kenneth Salley and wife Becky; 50 grandchildren; 88 great-grandchildren; 27 great-great grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday October 1, 2005 at the Church of Christ, located at 9th and Linwood, Cushing with Minister Wendyl Heffington officiating.

Burial will follow in the Fairlawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Robert Collard, Paul Roe, Keith Swafford, Max Alston, Rick Richardson and Jordan Pinkerton.
