Cushing Youth Killed By Shotgun

A Cushing highschool sophomore was killed Sunday when a shotgun blast struck him in the chest as one of his classmates explained how to load the weapon.

The Victim, Don Kennedy, 16, had attended Sunday school here with Mike Jones, 15, and had returned to Jones home to experiment with the gun.

The youths were in the bedroom of the Jones home when the shooting occured.

The Jones boy said he had ejected four shells from the gun but forgot to eject the fifth.

"I guess I forgot how many shells I had put in the gun," the youth said.

Cushing policeman Riley Blair said young Kennedy died instantly when the blast from the 16-gauge shotgun struck him in the chest.

Assistant County Attorney Dennis Cubbage ruled the shooting was an accident.

Jones said he had borrowed the shotgun from the director of the Rifle Club here. He was a member of the club and had received instructions in how to load and unload the weapon. Kennedy was not a member of the club.

Jones is the son of Mrs Virginia Jones of Cushing.
