© Chickasha Express~Star Chickasha, Oklahoma Sunday, 8 October 2006 August 9, 1918 ~ October 6, 2006 John Vernon "Swede" Martin passed away October 6, 2006, in the Linwood Nursing Home, Cushing, Oklahoma, after a lengthy illness. He was born August 9, 1918, in Loco, Oklahoma. His parents, James David and Josephine Martin, preceded him in death. Mr. Martin was a native of Sulphur, Oklahoma, a graduate of Davis High School, and a graduate of Oklahoma A & M with a degree in Agronomy in 1941. After graduation Swede worked with the Soil Conservation Service at DeFuniak Springs, Florida. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Navy in WW II. In the early 1940s he began his career with the Soil Conservation Service in Lindsay, Oklahoma and was an economist for the Watershed Group at Chickasha, Oklahoma; served as Area Conservationist at Pauls Valley, Oklahoma; served as the Assistant State Conservationist for the Alabama State Conservation Program; and served as the Missouri State Conservationist. In 1975, he moved to Fort Worth, Texas and served as the Director of the South National Technical Center and Assistant Chief of the SCS for the Southern [16] States. In 1979 he retired from the Soil Conservation Service and lived the remainder of his life in Stillwater, Oklahoma. |
© Palmer Marler Funeral Home Cushing, OK - Payne and Lincoln County July 2008 October 30, 1918 ~ July 16, 2008 Mrs. Julia "Judy" Maud Anderson Martin, age 89, of Cushing, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully July 16, 2008, at Linwood Village Assisted Living Residence. She was born in Cushing on October 30, 1918, to TA "Nick" and Mina Anderson and was educated in the Cushing School system where she graduated with honors from Cushing High School. After graduation from high school, she attended Oklahoma A and M College in Stillwater, Oklahoma. While in college, she met and married John Vernon ("Swede") Martin. Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years in October, 2006, as well as her parents, her brother, Jim Anderson, and her two sisters, Jetty Cook and Jesse Griffeth, both of Cushing. She is survived by her two children, Vernon Dee Martin and his wife, Kanda, of St. Simons Island, Georgia and Judy Anderson Ostervold, and her husband, Lars B. "Bernie", of Columbus, Georgia. She is also survived by five grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. During her adult life, she and her husband lived in Lindsey, Chickasha, Paul's Valley, Auburn, AL, Columbia, MO, Ft. Worth, TX, and various other cities due to the advancement of her husband's career with the United States Soil Conservation Service They retired to Stillwater, OK. in 1979. When their health began to fail, they relocated to her home town of Cushing. In Stillwater she was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, the Exchange Club, NARFE, the Soil Conservation Society, and the Stillwater Golf and Country Club. She also assisted her husband as an advisor to Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity at Oklahoma State University. She was a member of the OSU Posse Club and the Oklahoma State University Foundation. The great pleasures of her life were gardening, cattle ranching, supporting the activities and interests of OSU, and being with her family. Mrs. Martin was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her family and friends. The family expresses special thanks for the assistance and care given by the staff at Linwood Village, the Judith Karman Hospice staff, Dr. Randy Grellner and his medical staff, and the members of Mrs. Martin's extended family in the Cushing area who supported her with love and affection while she was a resident of Linwood Village. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations to the Judith Karman Hospice, PO Box 818, Stillwater, OK 74076 or the Oklahoma State University Foundation, PO Box 1749, Stillwater, OK 74076-1749. © Davis Funeral Home Cushing, Oklahoma February 2006 October 17, 1933 ~ February 21, 2006 Barbara Jean Martin Cummings, longtime Cushing resident, passed away early Tuesday morning, February 21, 2006 at her residence at the age of 72 years. The daughter of the late Kenneth Camblin and Edith Beard Camblin, Barbara was born on October 17, 1933 in Oilton, OK and was reared and educated in Oilton, graduating from Oilton High School. She was united in marriage to John R. Martin on June 30, 1951 in Oilton and to this union, two sons, Kenny and Gary were born. The couple came to Cushing in 1955, where they owned and operated the Martin Tank Truck and Casing Pulling Company until February of 1989. John preceded her in death on June 12, 1989. She was united in marriage to Tom Cummings on July 28, 1994 in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Barbara was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church and for several years taught Sunday School Class; she had served as Den Mother for the Boy Scouts; had served on various committees of the Youth Center; had volunteered with the Hospital Mobile Meals; was a member of the Hypatia Club; she loved china painting, traveling and photography. Survivors include her husband, Tom Cummings of the home; two sons, Kenny Martin and his wife Kama, Gary Martin and his wife Carmen of Cushing; step-children, Steven Cummings and Chad Cummings and his wife Kim of Kellyville, and Mandy Franks and her husband Jim of Bartlesville; grandchildren, Camblin Martin, Clinton Martin, Christal Martin, Eric Martin, Ashlee Martin and Rachel Martin; step-grandchildren, Malachi Cummings, Skylar Cummings, Marlon Cummings, Kennedy Franks, Mckenzie Franks and Brook Franks and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2006 at 2 P.M. in the First United Methodist Church with reverend Ted Uhlig, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Euchee Valley Memorial Park Cemetery. |
