July 1, 1909 ~ November 9, 2006

Herman "Slim" Clopton, Sr., 97, long time Cushing resident, died peacefully November 9, 2006, at the home of his daughter, Joyce, in Ventura, California.

Mr. Clopton was born July 1, 1909, in Hardy, Oklahoma.

Herman "Slim" Clopton, Sr., 97, long time Cushing resident, died peacefully November 9, 2006, at the home of his daughter, Joyce, in Ventura, California.

Mr. Clopton was born July 1, 1909, in Hardy, Oklahoma.

His early years were spent with family in Oklahoma railroad construction camps. The family later settled in Drumright where he attended school and delivered Western Union telegrams. He also worked on pipelines and road building projects from Chicago to South Texas.

Slim married Nellie Cole in Drumright in 1937, and moved to Cushing in 1939, when work became available at Deep Rock Refinery. He was employed at the refinery until its closing in 1972.

Mr. & Mrs. Clopton were active members at First Baptist for 60 years. Slim and Nellie taught Sunday school, she was involved in ladies’ groups, and he served as a deacon.

Slim was a volunteer firefighter for 25 years, active in the Masonic Lodge, and was a master automotive mechanic who enjoyed working on and trading cars and trucks.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nellie; mother, Belle Lambert, and brothers, Pat and Cecil.

Survivors include daughter Joyce Howell, son Butch & family of Anchorage, Alaska, nine grand-children, and thirteen great-grand-children.

A memorial service will be held in Ventura with family, and a celebration of his life will be held at Cushing's First Baptist Church on Saturday, November 18, 2006 at 1 P.M. with Dr. Lonny Lee, pastor, officiating.

A private burial will be held in the Euchee Valley Memorial Park Cemetery.

Because of the desire of Slim and Nellie to preserve the stained glass windows of First Baptist Church, the family requests in lieu of flowers, donations to be sent to the church’s Stained Glass Window Fund, 418 E. Moses, Cushing, Oklahoma, 74023.
