With family by her side, Ruby May Greenwood Stiles went peacefully to be with the Lord May 12, 2009.
She was born September 6,1921 to Herbert Lee and Sarah Jane Fillmore Greenwood in rural Cushing.
She grew up on her family’s dairy farms.
She attended Ripley public schools where she also graduated high school.
Ruby lived through the great depression, learning many hard life lessons at an early age. A sister to seven siblings, Ruby’s devotion to family began very early in life as she helped raise many of the younger brothers and sisters.
She was just as devoted to her church family and activities at the Big Creek Church of the Brethren which her family helped establish in the late 1800’s. She was head of the kitchen committee for many, many years planning and preparing hundreds of meals in the church kitchen.
She met her husband of 67 years at a church weiner roast in 1937. Ruby must have made quite an impression on him because their children remember hearing stories of how young Lee Ray rode his horse three miles just to see her. According to Ruby’s sister they always knew he was coming because they could hear him singing as he was riding down the road.
The couple both worked their farm west of Cushing. She spent numerous hours in the milk barn and fields while raising their four children, Darrell, Janice, Glen “Shorty”, and Nancy. Somehow she still found time to make most of their clothes, preserve their food, and participate in women’s fellowship and home extension club.
Ruby, Lee Ray, and their son Darrell were very active in the agricultural community and well known for the state-of-the-art milking facility they built in 1969 where they enjoyed many visitors who dropped in for tours. Their family was the W.K.Y. radio farm family for 1964; Cushing Lion’s Club family for the year 1971-72; and was the Payne County Rural Urban Family of the Year in 1973.
Ruby was very proud of her children, grandchildren and their many successes. A former basketball player herself, Ruby enjoyed watching her family participate in competitive events. She was even known to be quite a fan of the Cowboys supporting OSU where all four of her children and many of her grandchildren earned their degrees.
Ruby was preceded in death by her husband and oldest daughter, Janice, two years ago, and her younger brother, Harold “Bub” Greenwood.
Survivors include her two sons, Darrell Stiles and his wife, Billie and Shorty Stiles; daughter, Nancy Chipukites and her husband Gordon “Chip,” all of Cushing; four sisters Opal Roe, Beulah Killough, and Ethel Chadwick, Cushing; and Florence Presley, Stillwater; and her brothers John Greenwood, Argonia, KS; George Greenwood, Moorehead, MN. Ruby is also survived by three granddaughters, LaMecia Stidham and her husband Tim, Stillwater; Mona and her husband Darren, Broken Arrow; LaDawn Hladik and her husband Clint, Earlsboro; five step grandchildren, Brenda McDearmon and her husband Mike, Amarillo, TX; Carl Henry and his wife Gina, North Richland Hills, TX; Jennifer Benson and her husband Tim, Belton, SC; six great grandchildren, Kayla and Colt Burden, Drake and Tatum Burns, Kieser and Maylin Hladik. Ten step great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Aly, and Keagon McDearmon, Logan, Landon, and Laina Henry, Chase and Rachel Benson, Emily and Shelby Stidham of Stillwater; several nieces and nephews, other family members and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, May 16, at the Church of the Brethren, in Cushing, with the Rev. John Holderread officiating.
Interment will immediately follow in the church cemetery.
