Janice J. Stiles, Cushing resident, passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 in the Hillcrest Medical Center at the age of 64 years.

The daughter of Lee Ray Stiles, Jr. and Ruby Greenwood Stiles, Janice was born on June 21, 1942 in Cushing where she was also reared and educated. She graduated from Hillside Grade School as star basketball player and award winning 4-H member, then Cushing High School in 1960.

She graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1964, receiving her B.S. in Home Economics. Upon her graduation, she moved to Rapid City, SD to teach Vocational Home Economics. She received her Masters in Family Relations and Child Development from Colorado State University. She attended the University of Colorado J.F.K. Child Development Center on a Fellowship in Special Education and the Northern Illinois University in Guidance Counseling. She was Director of Pre-school labs at Northern Illinois University. From there she moved to Evergreen, CO teaching preschool/kindergarten. After teaching several years, she decided to try her hand as a small business owner/operator of the Maverick Recreation Center and Restaurant. When the restaurant burned, she started her career with the State of Wyoming as a Health and Social Services Consultant in Big Horn County, WY, then moving to Cheyenne. She continued her work there in Family Services as well as the state weatherization program. Her specialty and love the last few years with the state was helping draft the Adult Protective Services Program update. She was instrumental in drafting legislation that led to State and National changes for Adult Protective Services now used in many states. Her name was very familiar in Department of Family Service offices all across the nation. She retired from the State of Wyoming June 21, 2005 on her birthday.

Her dream of moving back home to Cushing to help with her parents came about Memorial Day this past year when she bought her perfect dream place.

She enjoyed fishing, gardening, painting, refinishing furniture, photography, genealogy, traveling and cooking for large crowds.

Survivors include her parents, Lee Ray and Ruby Stiles of Cushing; one sister, Nancy Chipukites and her husband Gordon “Chip”; two brothers, Darrell Stiles and his wife Billie and Glen Stiles all of Cushing; three nieces, LaMecia Stidham and her husband Tim, Mona Burns and her husband Darren and LaDawn Hladik and her husband Clint; eight great nieces and great nephews and other relatives and friends.

Services will be held on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at 2:00 P.M. in the Big Creek Church of the Brethren with Reverend John Holderread officiating.

Burial will follow in the Church Yard Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Tim Stidham, Darren and Drake Burns, Clint and Kieser Hladik, Pearce Kuykendall, David Kuykendall, Colton Burden, Chip Chipukites and Charles Barnes.
