Gene grew up and attended school in Osage, Oklahoma, graduating as the Salutatorian with the Class of 1954. During his time in school, Gene was a member of the basketball team. Following high school, Gene joined the United States Army. He served with the Headquarters Battery 549th AAA Battalion stationed in Thule, Greenland.
