Mack Smith was born August 8, 1926, in Oklahoma City to Reuel Elijah Smith and Lora Fortier (Armitage) in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Doc was in the Navy and served in the Philippines during WWII.
Corresponding with his grandmother (from whom his future wife was renting a room) he came to know Wanda. They married in 1950 and were married for 62 years. Doc came to Pawnee in 1955 with his beloved wife, Wanda and their 2 young daughters. Here he started optometry practice, saying he “never worked a day” because he enjoyed going to the office every day. He was president of the State Optometric Association, served on the Board of Trustees for the Southern College of Optometry, as Secretary/Treasurer of the State Board of Examiners for 2 terms, and also on the Board of Directors of the Vision Educational Foundation for 27 years, and was president for the last 7 years. He retired from practice in 1993.
He has a big love for the community of Pawnee and had been an active member in several organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce, the Lions Club, honoree at the 16th Pawnee Bill Memorial Rodeo, conducted school visual screenings, and Friends of the Pawnee Bill Ranch Association. He was also an active member and deacon of his church, Pawnee First Baptist Church.
Mack went to heaven on November 13, 2021, at his daughter’s house in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Mack is survived by; daughter Brenda Garrett, Tulsa, Oklahoma; 4 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.
Mack was preceded in death by his wife Wanda; oldest daughter Patty Hobbs; and his parents.
Visitation on Wednesday November 17, 2021, at 10::00 – 7:00 at Poteet Funeral Home and Cremation Services. Services will be Thursday, November 18, 2021 – 10:00 at the Pawnee First Baptist Church,
interment will be private at Highland Cemetery, Pawnee, Oklahoma.
