Walter Darrell Meeker

Train-truck accident takes life of local man, Saturday

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon for Walter Darrell Meeker, 68 who died Saturday evening following a truck-train accident in Pawnee Saturday morning at 10:12.

The truck which he was driving was hit by a train near the local depot. The train was traveling east and Meeker was driving south across the tracks when the truck was hit behind the cab on the passenger side and knocked 84 feet along the right-of-way. He was rushed to a local hospital where he passed away a few hours later.

According to witnesses, Mr. Meeker was driving east on Kansas street along side of the Pawnee Grain company and then turned south at the intersection with Sixth street where he was hit almost immediately. There were 4 railroad cars parked on one of the 3 tracks there which could have obstructed his vision of the oncoming train, observers stated.

Born Feb. 5 1898 in Oklahoma Territory, he lived in Pawnee most of his life. He moved to Blackwell in 1943 and back to Pawnee in 1964 where he was engaged in the logging business.

He married Gladys Brim on Oct. 22, 1924 in Pawnee and she survives as do 3 daughters: Mrs. Robert L. Elliott of Edwards Air force Base, Calif.; Mrs. Cleo C. Schone of Blackwell and Mrs. Bill H. Gile of Ponca City plus 6 grandchildren. He is also survived by 2 brothers and 2 sisters: Mrs. George Wisley of El Dorado, Kansas; Mrs. Leroy Griesel of Pawnee; the Rev. Martin Meeker of Las Vegas, Nevada and Boyd Meeker of Pawnee.

He was a member of the Christian Church in Pawnee. Services were held at the Poteet Funeral Chapel at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. L. Jim Anthis, Christian church pastor officiating. Interment was in Highland cemetery under direction of the Poteet Funeral Home.
