Liane Meeker Griesel

September 23, 1908 ~ November 15, 1983

Liane Meeker Griesel, 75, Pawnee county native mother of seven, passed away here at her home on Tuesday, November 15, 1983, and funeral services will be held today.

Born in Pawnee county on September 23, 1908, to Charles Calvin and Elsie Amelia (Aldridge) Meeker, she lived in Pawnee county all of her life.

She was married to Leroy Griesel in Chandler, Oklahoma, on February 21, 1925 and he survives as do their two sons and five daughters: Phillip L. Griesel of Arkansas City, Kansas; William Charles (Bill) Griesel, Marjorie Buchanan, Marianne Denny all of Pawnee; Peggy Goodrich of Enid; Dr. Effie Medford of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Nancy Burnes of Maramec.

Also surviving are 20 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren plus a number of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by twin sons.

Mrs. Griesel was an active member of the First Christian church where she was a Deaconess and taught the Loyal Women's Sunday school class for 13 years. She was a member of the Pandora Extension Homemakers club for 31 years and was the last survivor of the 11 children of Elsie and C. C. Meeker.

The Rev. Steve Churchell, pastor, will officiate at the 2:00 p.m. service today, Thursday, November 17, 1983, at the First Christian Church of Pawnee and interment will be in Highland Cemetery under the direction of the Poteet Funeral Home of Pawnee.

William LeRoy Griesel

January 17, 1904 ~ August 14, 2000

William Leroy Griesel, pioneer Pawnee cattleman/farmer, 96, passed sway in Pawnee on Monday, August 14, 2000, and funeral services were held here this morning. He is survived by 82 direct descendants.

He was born in Pawnee, Oklahoma Territory on January 17, 1904 to William Griesel and Effie May (Cox) Griesel.

He graduated from Pawnee High School in 1923 and attended two years at Central State Teacher's College at Edmond and was a teacher at Star-A-Star, Duff and Prosperity rural schools.

Leroy and Marjorie Liane Meeker were married at Chandler, Oklahoma on February 21, 1925 and they had nine children. She preceded him in death on November 15, 1983.

He lived in Pawnee County all of his life where he was a farmer, rancher, trader and admirer of good horses.

He was an elder of the First Christian Church where he had taught a men's and a Junior High boy's Sunday School class and was a Boy Scout troop leader. He was a member of the local Rotary Club, Farm Bureau, Wolf Hunter's Association and the Republican party.

Leroy was chosen as the honoree of the Pawnee Bill Memorial Rodeo in 1989 and attended that rodeo here last week.

Surviving are seven children and their spouses: Phillip Griesel and his wife, Kerry; Marjorie Buchanan and her husband, D. E. "Buck"; Marianne Denny and her husband, Bill, all of Pawnee; Peggy Goodrich and her husband, Jim, Enid, Oklahoma; Effie Medford and her husband, Jim, Cedar Crest, New Mexico; Nancy Burnes plus William Charles (Bill) Griesel and his wife, Judy, both of Pawnee plus 22 grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Also surviving is a sister, Thelma Meeker and two brothers, Dan Griesel and Bob Griesel, all of Pawnee and a host of other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Liane, and parents plus two sisters, Ethel Berg and Elizabeth Baker, twin sons and six grandchildren.

The Revs. Dave Arnold and Tom Scott officiated at the 10:00 a.m. funeral service on Wednesday, August 16, 2000 at the First Christian Church followed by interment in Pawnee's Highland Cemetery under direction of the Poteet Funeral Home of Pawnee.
