Charles Edward Cheatham

Charles Edward Cheatham
November 10, 1949 ~ Aug 22, 2019

Charles Cheatham was born November 10, 1949, in Stillwater, OK, to Jim Cheatham and Diana (Carter) Cheatham, of Pawnee, OK. His parents and grandparents owned a retail store in Pawnee, where he worked from the age of 6. He was Valedictorian at Pawnee High School and a National Merit Scholar.

He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1979, after earning honors degrees from OSU in English, Spanish, and French, and doing graduate work in English. He always had a love of writing, and polished his skills by teaching composition as a graduate assistant at OSU.

He worked for 40 years in Oklahoma City as a banking law attorney, first at McAfee & Taft and later as General Counsel for the Oklahoma Bankers Association, where he advised bankers on compliance questions and penned more than a million words of articles and seminar materials for bankers. He served for the past 10 years as SVP & General Counsel for BankOnIT, LLC, an IT company.

He never liked the spotlight, but he contributed his time to organizations that he cared about. He served on the boards of Gatewood Historic District (26 years), Eastern Avenue Church/Moore Bible Church (27 years) and the Oklahoma Anthropological Society (10 years). He very much enjoyed working at the OKC Civic Center for the last 18 years as a volunteer. For most of his adult life, he sang in church choirs. He did song-leading in church for more than 15 years. He also donated blood more than 100 times.

He was a voracious reader, and enjoyed archeology digs, doing genealogy, and remodeling his apartments. He always stayed busy, and always had more plans and ideas than he could possibly accomplish.

He married Nita Cearley on October 15, 1983, and they shared almost 36 happy years of marriage.

He is survived by his sweet and loving wife, Nita, by their son, Nathan Cheatham (and daughter-in-law, Krystle) of Oklahoma City, and by grandchildren, Lucas Cheatham and Adalynn Cheatham. He is also survived by his brother, Keith Cheatham (Joyce) of Pawnee, and by his sister, Candace Crisswell, of Oklahoma City, as well as nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at Trinity Baptist Church, located at 1329 NW 23rd, in Oklahoma City. Interment to follow at Highland Cemetery, in Pawnee, OK.

Services are under the direction of the John M. Ireland Funeral Home & Chapel, Moore, OK.
