Rev. Loy Gene "Tobe' Sperry was born on December 27, 1935, in Blackburn, Oklahoma, to Jesse and Dorothy (Milam) Sperry. Tobe was raised and attended school in Blackburn. He then joined the United States Army, where he served in active duty during the Korean War from 1954 to 1955. Tobe also served in the Army Reserve following his time in active duty.
Upon his return from military service, Tobe lived in Wichita, Kansas, where he met his future wife, Doris Gann. The couple were married on June 04, 1962, in Berryhill, Oklahoma. They moved to Tulsa, where Tobe was employed by Rockwell International. They eventually settled in Spavinaw, Oklahoma, in 1970. Tobe was employed with Rockwell International for many years before retiring in 1990.
Throughout his life, Tobe enjoyed doing leathercraft. He made beautiful, high-quality chaps, bible covers, belts, and saddles. He also had an extensive collection of flashlights and lawnmowers (some worked, some didn't).
Tobe and Doris were the founders of Spavinaw Hills House of Worship. In retirement, Tobe focused his efforts on the church and its congregation. The ministry of he and his wife touched the lives of countless partitioners over the years. He also extended his ministry to include doing missonary work in Mexico.
In addition to his work in the church, Tobe served his community as a member of the Spavinaw school board for many years. Tobe never met a stranger and was considered a friend to all. He will forever be remembered as a great husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend.
Rev. Loy Gene "Tobe" Sperry departed this life on April 17, 2026, in Salina, Oklahoma, at the age of 90.
Tobe is survived by his son, Ron (April) Sperry; daughter, Anita (Dub) Newton; grandchildren: Erica (Kevin) Ozbun, Cody Sperry, Jordan (Easton) Julian, Grant (Marisol) Newton; great-grandchildren, Myka Jo, Hayden, Quincy, Roddy Loy, Kooper, Taylor, and Makenzie; sisters: Maxine Mahan, and Pauline (Joe) Moore.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Dorothy Sperry; wife, Doris; brothers: Frank Sperry, Walter Sperry, and James Sperry; sisters: Gladys House, and Peggy House.
