Mrs. McKinney was born at Mounds, Oklahoma on March 23, 1914 to Orval Bruce (Brody) Hurt and Mirtie Ellen Harvey Hurt. She was the second born of 9 children and the family moved from the Mounds area to Barnsdall in the fall of 1919. The family moved in a covered wagon and a covered buggy for work in the Barnsdall area to help build Highway 11 and help pull wells in the oil field. The family started as share croppers including the children who helped when they were old enough. Mrs. McKinney was born blind in one eye, but wanted an education and attended school as often as she could as she had to stay home to help feed harvesters during the harvest time. She graduated from high school in 1934 at the age of 20. Following her high school graduation, she helped the Thede Allen family at the Sunset School near Hominy. She began her college at Oklahoma A & M in Stillwater in 1935 and graduated with her degree in Home Economics for teaching in 1940. She was married to Clifford Cook on December 25, 1938 at Fittstown, Oklahoma. Mr. Cook served in the military in Germany during World War II from 1942 until 1945. During his military services he was a 2nd Lt and later became a Major. While Mr. Cook was overseas, she worked at an airplane factory in Wichita. When Mr. Cook returned from overseas, they were owners of a hardware company in El Reno and Mr. Cook was killed in a plane crash in 1949 while flying his own plane for the Agriculture Department. On February 5, 1955 she was married to Artice O. (Mac) McKinney in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Mrs. McKinney was employed with the Department of Public Welfare and Mr. McKinney was employed at Sears. They later owned a Ben Franklin Store in Shawnee and Mr. McKinney preceded her in death on May 22, 2002. She moved to Barnsdall to make her home where she was a member of the First Baptist Church and was an avid gardener. She worked hard all of her life for her family, church and country until at last her Lord said, "Well done, they good and faithful servant".
Mrs. McKinney is survived by a sister, Vona Lee Hurt Anthony of Barnsdall, a brother, Joe Boyd Hurt and his wife Joyce of Barnsdall, 24 nieces and nephews, 58 great nieces and nephews and 71 great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, Kenneth Bruce Hurt, Jerl Harvey Hurt, Grover Cleveland Hurt, Nellie Mae Hurt Lemley, Charlotte Parthena (Pat) Hurt Taylor and Hortense Myrtle Hurt Dixon.
