Curtis Owen Ballew, 86, of Osage County died Wednesday at his home.
Curtis, a lifelong resident of Osage County, was born the son of Curtis F. and Josephine (Gardiner) Ballew on July 5, 1929, at Charlie Creek just outside of Burbank, OK. At a young age, Curtis's family moved to the east side of Osage county where he attended Phillipsburg Grade School before transferring to Barnsdall High School, where he graduated in 1946. After graduation, he split his time between working on the family ranch and competing in rodeos. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army and served one year overseas in Korea. Once honorably discharged in 1951, Curtis returned to the rodeo and ranch before meeting the love of his life, Shirley Ann Jenkins. They were married on Nov. 17, 1956, in Bartlesville where they raised three children at the family ranch which they have shared for the past 51 years. Curtis started his 22-year career with the Bartlesville Fire Dept. and retired in 1980 as Assistant Fire Chief.
Curtis was a true cowboy who held a passion for calf-roping, quail hunting, fishing and poker. He was a strong family man and shared the thrill of hunting and fishing with his children and grandchildren. Curtis loved his hunting dogs and horses. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Curtis is survived by his wife Shirley of the home; one son Joe Curtis Ballew and Ronda of Elk City, KS; one sister Jo Ann Allee and Paul of Dewey, OK; five grandchildren, Lloyd Magnauck and Kati of Conroe, TX, Courtney Baumer and Mike of Franklin, TN, J.C. Ballew of Owasso, OK, Hunter Ballew of Elk City, KS, and Autumn Kahler Ballew of Chanute, KS; and three great grandchildren, Ella Mae Baumer, Benjamin Curtis Baumer and Woodlyn White. He is preceded in death by his children Kathy Magnauck and (Jim) James Ballew, and his parents.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Sat., Aug. 22, at the Adams Boulevard Church of Christ in Bartlesville, with Mr. David Hammonds officiating. Interment will follow with full military honors at the New Ethel Reece cemetery in Barnsdall. Visitation will be Friday from 12-8 pm at the Funeral Home. Services are under the direction of Carter Davis and the Davis Family Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family kindly requests donations be made to the Hope Harbor Children's Home, PO BOX 1047, Claremore, OK 74018.
