Daniel Joe Simmons of Pawhuska passed away at the age of 70 at his residence on March 7, 2016. Dan was born at home in Ramona, OK on January 27, 1946 to Everett Ray and Zelma Florence (Poindexter) Simmons. Dan received his education at the Ramona schools, graduating in 1964. Upon graduation, he attended Northeastern State College, now Northeastern State University, majoring in English. While attending Northeastern, he began his student teaching at College High School, now Bartlesville High School, and was hired the spring semester to teach English. Dan spent his entire career of thirty years there, retiring in 1998. He received his Masters Degree from Central State University.
On December 23, 1978, he and Jean Ann Terrill were united in marriage in Pawhuska.
In 2012, he was inducted into the Bartlesville Public School Foundation Hall of Fame.
Dan is survived by his wife of 37 years, Jean Ann; son Terrill Gier and Gretchen Simmons and precious little grandson, Terrill Gier Simmons, Jr., all of Pawhuska; sister Alice and James Watkins of Muskogee; sister-in-law Susan Simmons of Cecil, AR; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Janet and John Main of Tulsa. Many nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews also survive him.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Oren and Helen (Gier) Terrill; brothers William Lee Simmons, Paul Simmons, Robert Ray Simmons; brother-in-law Bill Glasgow and sister-in-law Jeanne Simmons.
Dan's wishes were to be cremated and no service.
Because of his love of teaching and the many, many students whose lives he touched, the Dan Simmons Memorial Fund has been created. The purpose of the fund will be to benefit the Language Arts Department at Bartlesville High School. Contributions to the fund may be sent to Bartlesville Public Schools, ATTN: Treasurer, 1100 S. Jennings, Bartlesville, OK 74003, signifying the Dan Simmons Memorial Fund.
