OKLAHOMA COUNTY OK

William L. and Robert M. Whisler made the 1889 Oklahoma land run. William L. Whisler staked a claim at Covell Rd. and Rockwell Ave. His brother, Robert M. Whisler's claim was at Covell Rd. and MacArthur Blvd. Robert established a cemetery on the southeast corner of this claim. Among the earliest graves in the cemetery are those of victims of a serious outbreak of measles in March 1892. They were Mary and Robert Young, children of James Young. They were in their mid twenties when they died. Another acre was added June 20, 1945 when Robert M. Whisler and Lizzie Whisler, his wife, issued warranty deed #485288 to Whisler Cemetery Association, Inc. The deed is recorded on Book 718, page 322. This acre was unused until about 2003 when it was fenced in and became a part of the rest of the cemetery. The cemetery is currently maintained and active.

The town of Whisler, Oklahoma, was named after William Whisler, postmaster. All that remains now of the town that existed from 1890-1904 is the Whisler Cemetery. A canvass of the cemetery in 1961 listed 83 surnames. The canvass can be found in the book Oklahoma Cemetery Records, Oklahoma County, Volume I at the Oklahoma Historical Library.
