Thomas Alexander Green, Jr.
Submitted by: Gloria Richard

Thomas (Tom) Alexander Green was born January 3, 1886 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, the son of Etta Hughes-Green and Thomas Alexander Green, Sr. He spent his childhood days in Memphis, Tennessee. As a young man, he migrated to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and settled there.
Around the age of 27, he met Maggie Jessie Estes. They united in holy matrimony on September 4, 1915 in a civil ceremony held at the County Court in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. From this union, four children - Raymond, Anna, Thomasine, and Orlando - were born. They affectionately called him “Papa.”
During his lifetime, Mr. Green worked especially hard to support his family. He was employed as a butcher by Morris & Company where he had a lengthy tenure from approximately 1917 to 1933. Later, he joined Armour & Company, Stock Yards Station, where he continued to work as a butcher until retirement. Although his primary occupation was in the meat packing industry, he often worked beyond the normal work day performing odd jobs as a laborer. This was particularly true throughout The Great Depression.
In 1939, after 24 years together with his wife, Maggie, Mr. Green's marriage ended in divorce. Although he was never called to serve, Mr. Green patriotically fulfilled his duty to support his country in its time of need by registering for The Draft during both World War I and World War II.
On June 7, 1943, Mr. Green married Martha Nesbit of Chandler, Oklahoma, in a civil ceremony in El Reno, Oklahoma. From this marriage, he welcomed the birth of his fifth child, Etta Caroline. Martha preceded Mr. Green in death, shortly after the birth of their daughter. As a widower and single father, Mr. Green lovingly raised Etta Caroline until his decline in 1951.
Mr. Green passed away on May 8, 1953 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, following a lengthy illness. In a memorial service, held May 15, 1953, at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church (Rev. J. T. Austin, pastor) in Oklahoma City, family and friends gathered to celebrate his life. He was remembered by all as a hard-working, generous, kind, devoted, and loving husband and father. At the time of his death, Mr. Green was survived by his five children and their spouses - Raymond Tirest (Javon) Green, Anna Margaret (Clarence) Hoston, Thomasine Mildred Smith, Orlando T. Green, and Etta Caroline Green, all of Los Angeles, California - and five grandchildren (Diane, Gloria, Carole, Ronald, and Keith).
