Eugene Frederick Vermillion, Sr.

December 12, 2017

Eugene Frederick Vermillion Sr. age 91 of Oklahoma City, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2017 after a brief illness. Eugene was born July 29, 1926 in Wichita, Kansas. He was the middle child of five children born to Eddie James Vermillion and Nellie Viola (Fry) Vermillion. Eugene grew up and attended school in Peoria, Illinois. At the age of 17, he joined the U. S. Navy and proudly served his country for two years during WWII. While in the service he was a Light Weight Golden Glove Boxer. After being honorably discharged, he returned to Oklahoma, completed his GED and attended one year of college at North Eastern University in Wilburton, OK. Eugene later met and married Hilda Ruth Strickland. They made their home in the Oklahoma City area and raised four children, Cheryl, Laura, Gail and Fred. Eugene worked most all of his life as a Civil Engineer retiring in 1991. After retiring he continued working part time for many years. Throughout his life, Eugene was an avid golfer. For the past 40 years he and his son, Fred played golf almost on a weekly bases. In his later years to keep himself in good physical shape, he continued golfing and began round dancing. Eugene was also an accomplished artist, painter and musician. He could play all kinds of stringed instruments but especially loved playing the mandolin. Eugene will be remembered as a Christian man who was proud of his country, and who was proud of his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: Parents, Eddie and Nellie Vermillion; Brothers, Wesley and Marshall Vermillion; Sister, Wanda Cook; Great grandson, Ashdon Fravel; He is survived by: Four children, Fred Vermillion Jr. and wife Wendy of Tuttle, Cheryl Weekes of Oklahoma City, Laura Dodson of Red Oak, OK, Gail Vermillion of Stigler, OK; One sister, Mary Virginia Whitten of Rockwall, TX; One sister-in-law, Fran Vermillion of Sulphur, OK. 13 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, one great great grandson; Many nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017 at Woodland Hills Baptist, 313 S. Hwy 76 in Newcastle, OK. The committal service will be 1:00 PM at Sunny Lane Cemetery in Del City. Arrangements are by Wilson-Little Funeral Home in Newcastle.
