Jimmie Lee Powell, Sr.
The funeral for Jimmie Lee Powell Sr., 80, of Enid, will be 10 a.m. Thursday, April 5, 2007 at Calvary Baptist Church, Enid. Rev. Tim Ohls and Pastor Everett Ohls will officiate. Burial will be 3:30 p.m. in Sunny Lane Cemetery, Del City, OK. Arrangements are by Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.
Jim was born in 1926 in Sand Springs, OK to Clarence and Mary Powell and went home to Jesus on Monday, April 2, 2007 at his home in Enid.
Jim moved to Oklahoma City at an early age where he grew up with three sisters, Roberta, Mary and Pat. He attended Central High School until he enlisted in the Navy in 1944. He served on the L.S.T. in the Pacific during the invasion of Okinawa, the liberation of the Philippines, and the occupation of Japan.
After the war, Jim worked at Tinker Air Force Base and then went to work delivering milk at Hansen and Atley Dairy where he met his future wife Linda. They were married in 1954.
Jim and Linda and son, Richard, moved to Enid in 1968 when Jim and his cousin, Everett Ohls, became the promoters of Enid Speedway. Jim also built the Comet Go-cart track in 1970. He sold the Speedway to Martin Bond in 1974 and the go-cart track to his son Richard. In 1975, Jim started his last business, Comet Sandblasting and Painting. He retired in 1989. He made many long-lasting friendships in all his endeavors.
Jim is survived by his wife, Linda; his children, Jimmie L. Powell Jr. of Australia, Cynthia Payne and husband Bob of Eufaula, OK, Kathleen Sanborn and husband Ken of Oklahoma City, Susan Bateman of Denver, CO, and Richard Powell and wife Karen of Thailand; three sisters, Roberta Coate and husband L.D., Mary Williams and husband Kenneth and Patricia Powell; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins, whom he loved very much.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one niece, Linda Lou Westbrook.
Memorials may be given to Jim's home church, Calvary Baptist Church of Enid or Hospice Circle of Love of Enid with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home acting as custodian of the funds, P.O. Box 3501, Enid, OK 73702.
