Joe Ben Barnes

Joe B. Barnes, 82, passed away July 7, 2013 in MWC, OK. Born March 23, 1931 to Sim and Annie Barnes in Lyford, TX, he graduated from Capital Hill High School in 1950, after joining the Navy. Joe became a corpsman serving aboard aircraft carriers, troop transports and hospital ships. During part of his 9 year Naval career he was assigned to a Marine unit and served on the ground in Korea. His family moved to MWC in 1956 and was a MWC Council man (6 Yrs), OK County Treasurer (19 yrs), and an entrepreneur of several businesses including Barnes & Friederich Funeral Home. He was a long time director of FNB Community Bank in MWC, and for Midwest Regional Medical Center. He was a member of and chairman of the Board of Regents for Rose State College. Regional Park was named in his honor in 1984. Joe married his sweetheart LaFern on May 24, 1953 and recently celebrated his 60th anniversary. He is survived by not only LaFern but by his children Ronald K Barnes & wife Barbara, Rhonda K. Burnett and husband David, grandchildren Kyle Barnes & wife Kaci, Tanner & Mandy, Conner and Kinsey Burnett, great grandchildren Jobe & Jalie Barnes, and expected Brynlee Burnett, and his sister Pauline Crawford, Victoria, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers S. B. Barnes, Jr & Horace Barnes. Joe was a great friend to many in MWC and Oklahoma County. He had a servants heart and gladly served his community with humility, integrity and a true concern and compassion for others. Having assured his family of his faith in God, his family knows they will rejoice together again in Glory. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Barnes has asked that donations be made to the Rose State Foundation Scholarship Fund in memory of Joe or the Joe B Barnes Regional Park. Services will be held at Rose State College, Performing Arts Center on Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at Sunny Lane Cemetery, Del City, OK
