Rachel Zelby, 92, of Norman, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2023. She was born in Sosnowiec, Poland to Herman and Sarah Kupfermintz. Rachel moved with her family to British Mandate Palestine in 1933 and grew up in Haifa. She served in Haifa during the 1948 Israeli War of Independence in a non-combat role and remained in Israel until 1954.
Rachel married Leon Zelby and emigrated to the United States. She lived in the Philadelphia, PA area until 1968, and moved to Norman. She initially worked raising her two children, but began to sell real estate in Norman in the early 1970’s. She loved all of the aspects of selling real estate, but in particular, the personal interactions and finding the right house for her client. Rachel was also active in the Norman Assistance League, University Women, several charitable organizations and cherished the time she spent with family and friends.
She survived and is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Laurie; son, Andrew; daughter-in-law, Cindy; her granddaughters, Elaine, Karen and Allison; and her great-granddaughter, Olivia.
A memorial and celebration of life will be held in the coming weeks.
