Kenneth Butler (Ken) Young died July 11, 2016 at age 89. Ken was born January 29, 1927 at a farm near Kenedy, Texas to Leonard Reginald (Rex) And Jewel Lee (Butler) Young. He often said that God could not have given him to a better couple than his parents. They loved and cared for him all the days of their lives. His only sibling, his sister LaVern, was born nearly two years later.
When the Great Depression drove the family from the farm, they moved to Corpus Christi, Texas where his dad could find work. Also, nearly all his mom's family lived there.
Ken joined the U.S. Navy on January 29, 1945 - his birthday. Following "boot camp" and radar school, he was assigned to duty as a radar operator aboard the destroyer, U.S.S. Howorth, DD-592. After the war ended he was honorably discharged in July 1945.
Over the next two and one-half years Ken experienced the greatest event of his life; he met and married the true love of his life, Gloria Burnett Young.
Subsequently, God further blessed this marriage with the births of two beloved sons, Kenneth Alan Young, April 3, 1952 and Jerry Don Young, November 8, 1954.
Ken's work experiences consisted mainly of repair and maintenance of aviation electronic equipment and systems for use on U.S. Navy aircraft (1948-1959); Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi, Texas; and on Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Oklahoma aircraft (1959-1983).
He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister and his beloved Gloria (February 9, 2015). He is survived by his son Kenny and daughter-in-law Becky; son Jerry Don and daughter-in-law Christina; granddaughters Sarah, Kendra, Whitney and Courtney; grandson Dima; great-grandsons Wyatt, Drake, Colton, Wesson and Brooks; grandsons-in-law Jon Pace, John Mark Aylor, Sam Rohlman and Jack Andrews.
Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2016 at the First Christian Church, 220 South Webster Avenue, Norman, Oklahoma. Officiating will be Gary Hardwick, Ministry of Discipleship.
