Martha Jane (Harmon) Yoss

Jan. 1, 1933 ~ Sept. 19, 2016

Martha Jane Harmon-Yoss, third daughter of Wherry Lafayette and Roberta Bell (Carter) Harmon, was born Jan. 1, 1933, northwest of Cleo Springs.

She attended first grade at Boiling Springs School, southwest of Aline, and continued her schooling at Cleo Springs High School, where she graduated as the Salutatorian of her class of 1950. Soon after graduation, she went to Enid to join her sisters and began working at S.H. Kress. In Enid, she met William James "Bill" Yoss Sr. They were married in the home of Rev. R.H.G. Albright, who performed the ceremony on March 12, 1951. Nine days later, Bill was sent with the 45th Division of Oklahoma National Guard to serve in Korea for fourteen months. During that time, she continued working at S.H. Kress and then Sears. When he returned, they lived in Enid until C.R. Anthony Co. transferred him to Big Spring, Texas. Several more moves were made, before they retired in Leonard, Texas.

Martha worked in the banking industry and was a member of the American Institute of Banking. She was also a graduate of the Texas Police Academy and was a former member of the Leonard City Council. She retired from the Blue Cross - Blue Shield Insurance Company.

Martha made her profession of faith at an early age, was baptized in the sand pit south of Cleo Springs, and became a member of the Methodist Church in Cleo Springs. She and her sisters were often referred to as the "The Trio," because when you saw one you saw all three. The church choir director taught them to sing parts as a trio. Then they were called the "The Singing Sisters."

Martha passed away at her residence in Leonard, Texas, Monday, Sept. 19, 2016, after bravely enduring a nearly twenty year battle with cancer. Her request to be cremated was fulfilled and there is no service at this time.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, William James "Bill" Yoss Sr. of the home; her sons, and daughters-in-law, William James "Jim" Jr. Yoss and wife, Sylvia, of Cuero, Texas; and Richard Alan "Rick" Yoss and wife, Jennifer, of Jet; her sisters, Hilda Hope Crain, of Helena; and Mabel May Godfrey, of Rolla, Mo.; her granddaughter, Rachael Collins and husband, Jeff, of Little Elm, Texas; and her great-granddaughter, Catherine Collins, of Little Elm, Texas.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Susan Yoss; and a grandson, Chris Arnold.

Memorials may be given in Martha's memory to the organization of your choosing.
