Donald (Donnie or Don) Ray Wright, came unto this life on April 13th, 1955 in Plano, TX. He was met by his loving parents: James Ray Wright and Mahala Ann Wright, who were known to most as ‘Pop & Nonie’, and who both preceded him in passing (2018 & 2019). Donnie’s early years and young adult life were encapsulated in the McKinney and Plano area, where he enriched himself in passions such as; Bull riding, dragster racing, disco dancing (late 70s), and earning a degree in foosball. Donnie was an avid horseman during his teen years, where he competed in American Paint Horse shows as well as stock shows; his specialty was in the cutting and reining categories. Donnie was a part of many wild tales in his day, with one being famous for people who knew him. Taking his rodeo skills to a new level, he and his buddy Jimmy Willis roped a bobcat in the Wilson Creek bottoms near Fairview Texas; some say it was staged, but a photo and a special report on the McKinney Courier Gazette say it was to stay as a legendary story. Donnie was also an officer for his High School FFA chapter, where he competed in livestock shows and developed himself while engaging in leadership & debate competitions.
In the mid-1980s, Donnie began his journey to God by working on a construction project for a Church. It was through the will of Christ Jesus, loving mentors, and close friends, that he first received the gift of salvation. He met his wife of 24 years in 1990, together they had two children, and lived for 9 years in Oregon; where Donnie worked and expanded his knowledge in the HVAC field. Deciding to move back south, he moved with his family to Caddo, OK, where he would stay and live for the remainder of his 23 years. Throughout his time in Caddo, Donnie operated a successful independent HVAC business and headed the grounds-keeping operation at Caddo High School. These careers supported his family and furthered his ultimate passion: Vintage car restoration.
Over time Donnie slipped away from the path Christ Jesus laid out for him, and hardship overcame him. It wasn’t until 2019 that he rediscovered a church that would be the place where he would find that righteous path again. He was led to Western Meadows Baptist Church by his oldest son Tyler, and as soon as he crossed the threshold he felt a loving spirit telling him that “He is home”. He soaked up the gospel teachings presented by Cole Newton for 5 wonderful years and experienced Christ’s love through fellowship from the brothers and sisters of WMBC. His final years were full of life, love, and spiritual growth through giving his life to Jesus, and a testament to the saving grace of God through Christ Jesus. He passed from his physical form and re-joined his spirit to God on September 7th, 2024.
Donnie is survived by his oldest son, Tyler Josiah Wright of Caddo, OK, youngest son Nathan James Wright of Bend, OR, sister, Andrea Stephens of Paradise, TX, brother-in-law, Rusty Stephens of Paradise, TX, Nieces & Grand-Nieces: DaLaine, Jeralyn, Clara, & Macie. He is also remembered and cherished by dear friends throughout the TX & OK area.
The family wishes to express gratitude to Victory Home Health for their loving care in Donnie’s final month, especially the professional and gentle care from Lindsey.
