Florence Marie (Matterson) Woods

Florence Marie (Matterson) Woods
October 2, 1937 ~ August 24, 2020

Florence, 82, long-time resident of Covington, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones. Florence was born in Ardmore, Okla., on Oct. 2, 1937. She was the daughter of her late parents, Elbert "Matt"erson Stephens and Nellie Mae Ensley-Stephens. She was preceded in death by four sisters: Velma "Jean," Dorothy Mae, Betty Louise and Marjoroie Ann; three brothers: Elbert Matterson Jr., William "James" and Edward "Joe."

Florence heart-brokenly left behind three children, Larry Allen Woods of Woody's Plumbing and self-entrepreneur, of Enid; Sherry Lynn of Stable's Bar in Stillwater; and Terri Carter, disabled home health nurse of Saginaw, Texas. She also left behind seven grandchildren, Kristen, Chris, Cody, Timmy, Kala, Keith, Kati and an unknown number of great-grandchildren.

Florence is survived by many friends who she considered family as well.

Florence began her life proudly working in a five and dime store. At one point, she was a waitress at Superior Restaurant. She then moved on to managing multiple restaurants and eventually owning her own restaurants. Eventually, she became a chef at both Northwestern Inn and Ramada Inn.

She made numerous friends during her years as a cashier of the Eastside Holdings in Enid. Florence's loving heart later led her to become a caregiver to many others.

Florence spent most of her adult years as a resident of Covington. She was a devoted mother of three children. She was ornery, loved practical jokes, she was a great friend, but oh how she loved bingo and casinos!

However, her greatest achievement in life was her ability to provide for her family under all circumstances and teach the value of family to those around her. Florence was often thrown many curve balls in life, but somehow you could always find her joking about something with her contagious giggle. Florence's greatest love in life were the children she had created and the family that had developed from them. One of her last wishes was for everyone to make the drive to Covington and celebrate life with her one last time.

Please join us to memorialize her and lift her up to God this Saturday, Sept. 5 at 10, at The First Baptist Church of Covington. All are invited.
