Sammy Jay Wood was born on August 6, 1945, to Frank and Betty Wood in Woodward, Oklahoma, and passed away peacefully at Kingfisher Regional Hospital on June 19, 2006.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Betty Wood, sister-in-law Sherry Wood and nephew Chad Burns.
Sam is survived by his wife Judy of 39 years; oned son, Jay and Libby Wood of Elk City, Oklahoma; one daughter, Jamie and Jason Smith of Edmond, Oklahoma; two grandddaughters, Abby, Emma, and "soon to be" grandson, Samuel Wood of Elk City; two sisters, Sandra and John Walker of Amarillo, and Donna and Larry Poston of Sharon; and one brother Joe and Cathy Wood of Elmore City; father and mother-in-law Leland and Bernice Burns of Cheyenne, brothers and sisters-in-law Mickey and Janet Burns of Minco and Jim and Mary Burns of Cheyenne; eight nieces and nephews; and 13 great nieces and nephews.
Sam was a devoted husband, father, and grandpa to his family, a deacon at the church, and active in the community.
Sam grew up on a farm in Sharon, Oklahoma, where he later graduated from High School. He received his Bachelor of Education and master of Education degrees from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and his Administative Certificate from the University of Oklahoma. Sam and Judy were married on June 1, 1967. He began his teaching career that fall at Nash, Oklahoma. Sam taught and coached one year at Nash before serving time in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflicct where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal of Honor. After returning from Vietnam, Sam began teaching in Sayre, Oklahoma, where he served as a teacher, athletic coach, and later as a high school administrator for 15 years. While at Sayre two children, Jay and Jamie, were born.
In 1985, Sam and his family moved to Kingfisher where he spent the next twelve years as an elementary principal at Gilmore Elementatry School. Sam retired from the school business in 1997 and began working for his good friend Ed Bivins at Community State Bank in Dover. Sam influenced many lives through his years in education and church service while here on earth, but always looked forward to meeting his eternal father in heaven. He put God first in everything and lived a life of faith that many would envy. He will truly be missed by his family and friends, but they know that he will be watching over them and waiting to greet them when they join him in their final resting place.
A memorial fund has been established at FBC, Kingfisher.
