Roy Lee Wood

February 20, 1928 ~ January 3, 2009

Wewoka, Okla. - Roy Lee Wood, 80 year-old lifelong Wewoka resident and retired Wewoka Fire Chief passed from this life January 3, 2009 at Holdenville General Hospital.

He was born February 20, 1928 at Caw City, Oklahoma (near Ponca City) to parents Thomas Homer Wood and Mallie Alice (Heflin) Wood.

Roy graduated from Wewoka High School in 1947 and went on to join the United States Navy where he served during World War II. He earned the rank of Yeoman Third and received the World War II Victory Medal after he had served on the U.S.S. Saint Paul battle ship. Following his military discharge he married Carole Dee Standridge on June 15, 1953 in Wewoka, Oklahoma.

Roy work for the City of Wewoka serving as the Wewoka Fire Chief until his retirement. He also owned and operated several businesses including an Insurance and Real Estate Company, and �Gatsby Antique Mall� in Wewoka. He and his brother Jack also built homes. Roy was a member of the Wewoka Methodist Church and the Wewoka Lions Club. He was also an avid golfer who enjoyed making his own clubs.

His loving family survives him, his wife of 55 years, Carole Dee Wood of the home in Wewoka; one son Kirk Wood of Shawnee, Oklahoma; one grandson, Jarrod Wood and his wife Dayna of Wewoka, Oklahoma; two great grandchildren, Emma and Stephen Kade Wood both of Wewoka, Oklahoma; one sister-in-law, Nina Wood of Wewoka, Oklahoma; one niece, shelly wood of Wewoka, Oklahoma and one nephew, Thom Wood of Wewoka, Oklahoma.

His parents, and one brother Jack Wood precede Roy in death.

Private family services are scheduled.

Cremation services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home - Seminole, Oklahoma.
