Carol Jennette Wolgamott found peace on October 16, 2020. She was met at Heaven’s Gates by her parents, Glenn and Mildred Babcock and brothers, William Paxton (Pat) and Lyle Baker Babcock. Other family members waiting for her were in-laws, Claude and Grace Wolgamott, sister-in-law, Cleta Ann McMurphy and husband, Darold, along with brother-in-law, Dale Myers.
Loving family members that will miss her are husband, David Wolgamott of the home; children, Shelley (Jeff) Colborn of Viola, Kansas, Charla (Tim) Turner of Freedon, Oklahoma and Durwin Wolgamott of Hardtner, Kansas; sister-in-law, Pearl Myers of Webb City, Missouri and Patricia Babcock of Colorado; grandchildren, Joshua Colborn of Caldwell, Kansas, Jessica Chegwidden of Norman, Oklahoma, Shelby (Ryan) Moss of Menlo, Kansas, Chonda (Cody) Dees of Alva, Oklahoma, Aubrie VanSteenbrug of Wichita, Kansas and great grandchildren, Rylan, Hudson, Oliver and Cashton.
Carol was born in the Freedom, Oklahoma Community on November 7, 1940. She attended several rural schools before graduating from Freedom High School, where she graduated with honors as the class Salutatorian. Education was very important to Carol and she dreamed of being a teacher. Her higher education started the fall semester of 1958 at Northwestern State University. She finally received her degree in Language Arts and Home Economics in 1985 after two pauses in her quest. Both pauses were attributed to her family. First was her marriage to David Wolgamott on May 1, 1959 and they made their home on the family farm west of Hardtner, Kansas where they were blessed with two beautiful girls. When Carol returned to school the second time, a baby boy decided to join the family.
Throughout her teaching career, Carol taught several levels of Language Arts, Home Economics and served as school librarian for Burlington, Oklahoma Public Schools from 1985 until she became an educator for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections at Bill Johnson Correctional Center in Alva, Oklahoma. During this time in her career, she was instrumental in providing the young men she worked with the opportunity to participate in official graduation ceremonies and to allow their families to celebrate with them.
Carol was an active member of her community for most of her life. In her youth, she was a member of her local 4-H club, Sunday school and church, along with all of the school vocal music opportunities available to her. Her list of community organizations as an adult was as varied as her interests were! She was a member of the Barber County Cow Bells, Hardtner United Methodist Church, where she served in several different leadership and teaching roles, along with singing in the church choir and playing the piano for services. Most recently she attended and served at the Cedar Grove Wesleyan Church in rural Woods County, Oklahoma. Her interests in home making skills led her to become a member of the local EHU group and she served on the Barber County Program Development Committees for both Family and Consumer Sciences and 4-H. Carol was a project leader for several different projects and a community leader for the State Line 4-H Club for several years. She enjoyed judging foods, sewing and fiber arts at the county and state levels along with the Make It Yourself With Wool competitions. She was a member of AAUW where she served on several committees and was a former member of the Rebekah Lodge in Hardtner, Kansas. Carol was also actively involved in the local and regional levels of the Kansas Area Agency on Aging.
Carol was the ultimate homemaker, successfully juggling the tasks of home and work. Her house was impeccable and her cooking skills were superb. Her fried chicken is still talked about by the young men who would come help shear sheep at their house. Her cherry dessert was always asked for at the Barber County Fair kitchen and her homemade German Chocolate Cake helped raise many dollars for her community where her husband, David, would always raise the bid high. Carol taught all three of her children to cook way above survival skills and her two daughters still enjoy sewing to this day. Carol enjoyed sewing with both her mother, Mildred, and her mother-in-law, Grace, and would help both with many tasks around their homes.
Besides her home making skills, she was great farm help. Carol drove a wheat truck, tractor and swather. She would go on parts runs but only if David would call ahead to order the parts or she took the part with her. She enjoyed her gardens and wildflowers around the home as well.
In lieu of flowers, please provide memorials to the Plane of Mercy, Cedar Grove Wesleyan Church or the memorial of your choosing through Lanman Funeral Home.
Graveside service for Carol will be Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Hardtner-Elwood Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Kiowa.
