Gene Mitchell Woelke

Gene Mitchell Woelke
April 26, 1924 ~ March 18, 2014

ENID, OK - Gene Mitchell Woelke was born April 26, 1924, in Fairmont, Okla., to Gustav and Kathryn (Stucker) Woelke. He died Tuesday, March 18, 2014, in Enid, Okla.

In 1935, his family moved to Enid, where he attended school.

After his first year at Phillips University, he was called by the Army Reserve in 1943. He served in the 99th Division during WWII in the Battle of the Bulge.

In 1946, Gene was discharged and began working for the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier in 1948. He went back to school at the University of Oklahoma, but again was called by the Air Force Reserve in 1949. He served in Elmendorf, Alaska, before his discharge in 1951.

Gene then returned to his work as a postal worker and retired in 1984, after 36 years.

Gene was a longtime member of Central Christian Church, the National Association of Letter Carriers and a 65-year member of the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Joe.

Gene is survived by his sister-in-law, Wendy Woelke of Enid; nieces, Joan McIntyre of Enid, Ann Bosley of Modesto, Calif., and Susan Bock of Edmond; special friends, Alan and Cheryl Burpo of Enid and their daughter, Chalayna, Gene�s �adopted� granddaughter.

The memorial service for Gene will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home.

Memorials can be given to Central Christian Church with the funeral home acting as custodian of the funds.
