Irene Louise Withgott, former longtime Woodward resident, passed away after a short illness on Tuesday March 19, 2024. She was 98 and doing well before the illness. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 7, 2024 at the First Methodist Church.
Irene L. Withgott was born on November 13, 1925 in Wilkinsburg, PA to Charles and Velma (Miller) Withgott. Irene lived in East McKeesport, PA for 9 years when her parents moved the family to Woodward where Mr. Withgott ran the Withgott Grocery on Main Street for 5 years. The family lived above the store and then moved to 16th and Jackson. Their home was damaged in the 1947 tornado. Irene and her sister were babysitting at the time of the tornado and didn't experience the damage. Her Dad built a new home and she lived there until 2021 when she moved to be with family in MD.
Irene graduated from Woodward High School 1943 and Northwestern College 1950. She was hired as Head Librarian at the Carnegie Library on 8th Street in 1954 and retired in 1986 after 32 years .
She enjoyed volunteering at the 1st United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women's Guild, reading, gardening, her cats, sewing and puzzles.
She is survived by her sister, Marjorie Russell, 10 nieces and nephews, 8 great nieces and nephews and 8 great, great nieces and nephews.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Velma Withgott, and 2 brothers, William Withgott and James Withgott.
