Deborah Kay "Debbie" (Hefley) Winburn

Deborah Kay "Debbie" (Hefley) Winburn
September 9, 1955 ~ June 15, 2023

Deborah "Debbie" Kay Winburn passed from this life on June 15, 2023, in the presence of her family. She was born at Muskogee, Oklahoma, on September 9, 1955 to Frank "Boo" and Dorothy Fields Hefley. She grew up in Gore, Oklahoma and was an enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation.

Debbie graduated from Gore High School in 1973. She earned Bachelors and Masters degrees from Northeastern State University. She also completed additional graduate training at the University of Central Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University. She was a beloved teacher, school administrator, leader and advocate for special education students, retiring from Muskogee Public Schools in 2016. One of her greatest joys was serving as a Special Olympics Green Country Area Director and State Games Committee member for many decades.

Debbie believed that all people were deserving of dignity, respect, opportunity, and kindness. She enjoyed live music, shopping, and travel with family and friends. Debbie was always up for anything that might lead to a big laugh and a good story. She loved dogs and thought all of hers were perfect.

Debbie was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband, Vernon "Keith" Winburn. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law B.J. and Misty Boyd and grandson Brendan, of Ada, Oklahoma; stepdaughter Elizabeth Winburn and grandchildren Adia and Davion of Midwest City, Oklahoma; stepson Tom Winburn of Fort Gibson, Oklahoma; sister, Donna Owen, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; nephew and niece-in-law Matthew and Jessica Owen and great niece Kawailele and great nephew Alexander, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; cousins who meant the world to her; her Special Olympics family; and many other friends and loved ones who will miss her fiery nature and funny stories.

A memorial service will be held at the Gore United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 8 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made in Debbie's memory to Special Olympics Oklahoma (6835 S Canton Ave, Tulsa, OK 74136).
