Bennie James Wimbrey, Jr. was born September 14, 1949 to the marriage of the late Bennie J. Wimbrey, Sr. and late Ella Mae Cash in Fort Worth, Texas. He was the third child and only son of their union.
Bennie grew up in Fort Worth, Texas and graduated from the historic I.M. Terrell High School in 1968. Following graduation, Bennie was drafted by the United States Army in 1970 and worked as a supply sergeant domestically and internationally. While in service, he earned many honors, including a National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, multiple Army Good Conduct Medals and a host of service ribbons. Bennie proudly served our country for 20 years and retired as an E-8 Master Sergeant.
After his military retirement, Bennie chose to advance his education. In 1989, he returned home to Fort Worth, Texas where he attended Mansfield Business School. He remained on the President’s Honor Roll and completed his program with a perfect 4.0. In 1993, Bennie relocated to Lawton, Oklahoma where he attended Cameron University and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1997.
Later, Bennie was called to serve again. He was ordained as a minister and became a high school educator. He taught mathematics, special education, and computer technology in Lawton Public Schools. During his tenure as an educator, he also served as a Title VII Counselor at Lawton High School. Following his second retirement from public school teaching, Bennie returned to work as an academic instructor at GEO, Lawton Correctional Facility. Bennie’s work in the prison system allowed him to use his education expertise and ministry to help inmates prepare for reentry into the community until his final retirement in 2012.
As a young man, Bennie had many hobbies. He enjoyed membership in the Masons fraternal organization and competed in martial arts. Bennie attained the rank of Black Belt 1st Dan of Tae Kwon Do. Bennie always loved good food and fellowship with friends, spending time with his family, shopping for nice housewares and clothes, and wA service summary is not availableatching sports (especially football), but he loved helping people more than anything. He was known for his benevolence and servant spirit by everyone blessed to make his acquaintance.
Bennie was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, community member, and man of God. He was a faithful elder and minister at New Life Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Lawton, Oklahoma. As part of his ministry, he was a Pathfinders leader within his church, served as a chaplain for the American Legion, Post 29, and regularly shared God’s word by visiting area nursing homes.
Bennie was preceded in death by his father Bennie J. Wimbrey, Sr., his mother Ella Mae Cash, and sister Alice Marie Wimbrey. He leaves to cherish his memory, son Charles Lambert; daughter Karmen Bell (Geno); sisters Shirley Ann Smith (Rayford), Danielle Kennard; seven grandchildren, Amiyah Lambert, Makayla Lambert; Hannah Lambert, Javon Lambert, Mason Nelson, Nicholas Bell, and Lauren Bell; significant other Renezza McLamb, and a host of family and friends.
The family will have a private memorial at a later date.
