Carl Wilkerson

Nov. 19, 1918 ~ Dec. 21, 2002

Carl Wilkerson died in Arcata Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at age 84.

Born Nov. 19, 1918, in Atoka, Okla., Mr. Wilkerson lived and worked in Oklahoma until 1945 when he moved with his family to Humboldt County, after his discharge from the Navy in 1944. He served at Camp Peary, Williamsburg, Va. He began working at Bud Peter's Dairy in Crannell in 1945. Later he worked for years in the local lumbering industry including Hammond Lumber in Crannell, Arcata Redwood, Arcata Plywood and Fortuna Plywood. He and his wife Vivian, moved to Yolo County in 1961 where he worked for Kimsey Welding until he opened his own business, Carl's Welding during 1970. He retired in 1984. Mr. Wilkerson and his wife returned to Arcata area in 1989. According to his family members, "he will always be remembered for his stories and great one-liners. He could always keep you laughing."

Mr. Wilkerson is survived by his daughters, Pat Vanderklis and husband Art of Arcata, Carlene Deniston and husband Jack of Federal Way, Wash., and Ginger Svihovec and husband Maury of Esparto; grandchildren, Kara McKay, Kim Vanderklis Sundberg, Carl Vanderklis, Miranda Vanderklis, Mark Deniston, Tony Deniston, Tracy Deniston Estes and Andy Deniston; numerous great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and half-sisters, Billy Jean Smith and Janetta Smith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Jewell Wilkerson, in 1995; son, Carl Ray Wilkerson, in 1949; sister, Peggy Moller; one half-brother; and five half-sisters.

The family requests memorials be directed to Hospice of Humboldt, 2010 Myrtle Ave., Eureka, 95501.
