Jo Nita (Hamner) White
March 22, 1936 ~ May 8, 2014 (age 78)

Jo Nita (Hamner) White, 78, of Norman passed away Thursday, May 8, 2014 after a long struggle with Parkinson’s Disease. She was born March 22, 1936 in Ashland, Oklahoma to Alton Bascom Hamner and Sybil Maxine (Tate) Hamner.

Jo grew up in Arpelar, Oklahoma and graduated from Haywood High School.  When she was thirteen, a suave city slicker from Detroit, Michigan arrived in Arpelar and stole her heart.  She married Chester Allen White on May 9, 1952, in Ada, Oklahoma at the age of sixteen and died one day shy of their sixty second wedding anniversary.  Jo earned a Master’s degree in Education from East Central University and a Master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Oklahoma. She was a librarian and English teacher where she taught at Asher, Latta and Norman Public Schools from 1972 to 1997.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alton Bascom Hamner and Sybil Maxine (Tate) Hamner; and her brother, Kenny Hamner.  Jo is survived by her husband, Chester White, Sr.; her daughter, Jo Alynne Flemig; her sons, Chester Allen White, Jr. (Debra), John Anthony White (Lisa), and Mark Vance White (Tonya), eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. She is also survived by her brother, John Hamner.

Memorial services will begin at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, May  2014 at the St. John’s Episcopal Church, 235 W. Duffy Street, Norman, Oklahoma,  with Father Dwight N. Helt officiating.
