Chester Allen White

Chester Allen White
April 28, 1932 ~ August 15, 2014 (age 82)

Services for Chester Allen White, 82, formerly of Ada, are at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 235 W. Duffy St., Norman, OK, Father Dwight N. Helt officiating.

Mr. White died Friday, August 15, 2014 at the Norman Veterans Center.  He was born April 28, 1932 in Detroit, MI to Toney Lee White and Lou Ona (Vaughan) White.  

The family moved back home to Arpelar, OK when Chester was 16.  He graduated from Haywood High School in 1950. He joined the U.S Navy and retired in 1972 as a Sr. Chief Petty Officer.  He was a radioman.  He served on the USS Chukawan, USS Cahokia, USS Interpreter, USS Vance, USS Porterfield, USS Galveston, and USS Oriskany.  He received a Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, a Vietnam Service Medal (two bronze stars), a Vietnam Campaign Medal,  COMNAVAIR Battle Efficiency Competition Award for Pacific Fleet Attack for exemplary performance, and a citation for outstanding performance of duty during combat operations against the enemy while serving on the USS Oriskany. He loved being in the Navy and he loved his country. After retirement, he earned a B.A. in Human Resources at East Central University.  He retired a second time from the State of Oklahoma Employee Security Commission in 1994.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Jo Nita (Hamner) White on May 8, 2014; his parents, Toney Lee White and Lou Ona (Vaughan) White; brothers, JL White and Donald White; and sisters, Dorothy Gromley and Merle Slayton.  Survivors include a daughter, Jo Flemig; and three sons, Chester White, Jr., John White and Mark White; 8 grandchildren and one great grandchild.  

He is also survived by two sisters, Jean Chapman and Sharon Johnson.

Arrangements for Chester and his family were placed in the care of the Vice family at the Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman.  Online condolences may be shared at www.HavenbrookFuneralHome.com.
