Charles Berton Wheeler

Charles Berton (Bert) Wheeler was called home to be with Jesus on January 26, 2015. Born November 03, 1936, to Charles Eugene Wheeler and Janet Pauline Lauderdale in Hominy, Oklahoma, he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. He was very happily married to his wife of 57 years, Kathleen Joy Tontz. Bert was preceded in death by his parents, and his sisters � Dr. Donna Frances Hicks of Edmond, OK; Lucile Elizabeth Reeves of Laurel, MS; and Dr. Karen Sue Hill of Sandersville, MS. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen of the home; son Charles Martin (Mark) of Luther, OK; son Jonathan Bruce (Jon) of Oklahoma City, OK; and daughter Joy Lynne Dickson of Edmond, OK.

Bert completed high school in Refugio, TX; received a Bachelors Degree from Central State College in 1958, and a Masters Degree from Oklahoma University in 1972. He worked for over 34 years at Tinker AFB in Oklahoma City, retiring in 1993 at the executive level in their financial management organization. After retirement from Tinker, Bert accepted an offer to open a branch office in Midwest City, Oklahoma for Karta Technologies, and gave them 10 years of his management expertise.

Bert and Kathleen were very active in square dancing, belonging to multiple clubs, serving as officers, becoming officers in the Central District Square Dance Association, including being the President of that organization, as well as Chairs of the Social and Special Events Committee for the 1988 National Square Dance Convention in Oklahoma City - attended by 19,000 square dancers from all over the world.

Bert has served many years as Trustee and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Midwest City and the First United Presbyterian Church of Guthrie. He was chairman on many occasions of the Finance and Property Ministry Teams. Bert has also been active in the Guthrie Kiwanis Club, serving in many capacities including President of the club, as well as being installed as Lieutenant Governor of the 11 clubs in Division 40 of the Texas-Oklahoma District of Kiwanis International. Bert also ably served as Treasurer of the 89er Celebration Committee over several years.

In addition, Bert has been very active in Masons since joining the Fraternity in 1992. He was a member of Guthrie Lodge #35, and served as Master of that Lodge as well as Trustee for several years. Further, Bert was also active in the Guthrie Scottish Rite as a Service Knight, Master of the Lodge of Perfection, and Almoner of all the bodies within the Scottish Rite. Bert was also a Shriner and a member of the Royal Order of Scotland.

Memorial services for Bert will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, January 30, 2015 at the First United Presbyterian Church in Guthrie with Pastor Scott Foster officiating. A private family burial will be held. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Noon � 8:00 PM
