Betty June (Ellis) Weir

Betty June (Ellis) Weir
???? ~ March 4, 2012 | Age 77

Grateful to be released from a body laden with pain & cancer, Betty June Weir, 77, of Blackwell, Oklahoma entered into the gates of heaven on March 4, 2012.

She was born in Standard, Louisiana to Joe & Georgia Ellis. Betty graduated in Kansas from Leavenworth High School & Saint Margret's School of Nursing in Kansas City.

Betty began her 52 year nursing career in 1956 in Kansas City & married Charles Weir in 1957. In 1958 they flew in a 2-seater Super Cub to Kodiak, Alaska. Betty worked as an RN at the Kodiak Island Medical Center where she & her family survived the historic 1964 earthquake. They moved to Anchorage in 1965 and she continued nursing at the Alaska Regional Hospital. Betty also assisted patients that required medical evacuation to Seattle and on one occasion, to Japan. In 1997 Betty joined the staff at the Department of Veterans Affairs until her retirement in 2008. At the tender age of 72 she was sited riding a tandem bicycle to work as well as white water rafting in the frigid Alaskan waters a few years earlier.

In 2008 Betty made the difficult decision to leave Alaskan family & close friends to move to Blackwell, Oklahoma. She immediately became an active member of Immanuel Baptist Church where she made many new precious friends & joyfully served as an AWANA cook.

Betty was a fiercely loyal friend, a dependable, hard worker & always available to help out her family. Also known as Granny, she treasured family gatherings, especially if dancing was involved.

Betty is survived by one son, David Weir of Anchorage, Alaska; a daughter, Anne Wyckoff and husband, Larry of Blackwell, Oklahoma; one sister, Gin Rohde & husband Jack of Rochester Hills, Michigan; a brother Ben Ellis & wife Shirley of Austin, Texas; a half-brother, Robert Lucas of Wichita, Kansas; four grandchildren, Jonathon, Steven, & Sarah Wyckoff & Kyle Weir and numerous nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Betty requested no funeral services but asked to be cremated and her ashes returned to Alaska.

Memorials in her honor have been established with Immanuel Baptist Church Building Fund, Hospice of North Central Oklahoma, and American Cancer Society in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.

The family is deeply grateful to Hospice, Doctors Whitson & Briggs as well as the friends that held our hand through this journey.
