Moira Carolyn (Kerr) Waterbury

Moira Carolyn (Kerr) Waterbury
December 18, 1938 ~ June 11, 2012 (age 73)

It is with great sadness that the family of Moira Waterbury announces that she passed away on June 11, 2012 after a long illness.

Born Moira Carolyn Kerr in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Dr. Waterbury dedicated her life to helping others.

A resident of Norman for more than 40 years, she received her Masters in Social Work in 1980 and a Doctorate in Ministry in 1995, and specialized in treating patients with both chemical dependency and mental health issues. She was also among the first HIV counselors in the United States beginning in the mid 1980s. Her expertise in Human Relations led to service with the University of Oklahoma as an adjunct professor, where she taught for 15 years at the Norman campus as well as with the OU Extension Division throughout the state and around the world. She devoted much of her time outside of teaching to caring for unadoptable animals, and was an active crusader for LGBT rights, serving as president of the Oklahoma chapter of PFLAG.

She is survived by her son Dan Spurgeon and his husband Drew Blakeman of Los Angeles; son Jonathan Spurgeon of Oklahoma City; sister Joyce Rees and brother-in-law Bryan Rees of Edmonton, Alberta; brother George Kerr and sister-in-law Doreen Kerr of Houston; niece Diana Kerr and sister-in-law Lucille Kerr of Halifax; grand-nephew Alex Thomas and his wife Aeleen Thomas of Norman; and other nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Friday, June 15 at 7 pm at St. Anselm Canterbury Association Church, 800 Elm Street, Norman. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Norman Animal Welfare, PO Box 370, Norman OK 73070, or to PFLAG Norman, PO Box 721692, Norman, OK 73070.

Arrangements for Moira and her family were placed in the care of the Vice Family at the Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman.
