George W. Walters, Jr.

December 31, 1925 ~ November 12, 2007

George W. Walters, Jr., 81 of Durant, died November 12, 2007 following complications from pneumonia.

Born December 31, 1925, in Durant, he grew up and graduated from high school in Durant.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the US Army from 1943-1946 when he returned to Durant.

George graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma State University with a degree in Instrumental and Vocal Music Education. He received his Master of Music degree from the University of North Texas in 1953.

From 1948-1953, George was junior high band director in Durant and spent one year as band and choir director in Atoka. He was band director in Lawton, Oklahoma from 1953-1957 where his band won numerous awards. In 1957, he became the high school band director in LaMarque, Texas where he remained until retirement in 1980. The LaMarque high school band was recipient of consistent first division ratings and countless awards. George was inducted into the Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame in 1994, was a member of American School Band Directors Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Phi Mu Alpha, and Phi Beta Mu. After retirement, he moved back to Durant.

George is survived by a daughter, Gloria Walters of Carrollton, Texas; a brother, Danny Walters of Carson City, Nevada; and several nieces and nephews.

The memorial service will be Wednesday, today at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 515 W. Beech, Durant, with Father James Blagg, officiating.

Memorials may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church.

Brown's Durant Funeral Service and Texoma Cremation Service are handling the arrangements.
