Martha Elizabeth (Flowers) Wallen

 October 12, 1932 ~ February 02, 2019

Martha Wallen, born Martha Elizabeth Flowers, passed away on February 2 at her home at the Brookdale Senior Residence in Kerrville, TX. She was born on October 12, 1932 in Uvalde, Texas, to Louise "Doll" Turner and Milton Lee "Mitt" Flowers as the youngest daughter in a family of eight.

She lived in Uvalde for the first 20 years of her life. She is survived by her sister, Edith "Dede" Ferguson. She will be known as someone who always wanted to look and be her best. She had a bright, always ready, smile that was as wide and open for the waiters at Brookdale as for the people she held most dear. She was a true Texas woman who was feminine and gentle but had the grit to get through the toughest challenges.

She attended Uvalde High School, graduating in 1950 and the Southwest Texas Junior College graduating in 1952. She married Edmund James "Jim" Wallen on February 7, 1953. They would have been married 66 years on this day.

Jim worked for Phillips 66 Petroleum Company for 50 years. In that time, Martha and Jim lived in over 25 places as doodlebuggers from Mississippi to Nevada. In 1971, they moved to Lagos, Nigeria and began several years of living overseas, including in Lima, Peru and Cochabamba, Bolivia, and finally settling in Bartlesville, Oklahoma in 1975. She and Jim developed many deep, lasting friendships from these places. She stayed in touch with her women friends from those days and from Kerrville until the end. They gave her strength.

In Bartlesville, she began her own career, and became an assistant vice president at Westar Bank. In 1991, she and Jim retired to Kerrville, Texas, which became their home. Jim survives her. Their three children Suzanne Wallen of Boston, MA, Martin Wallen and his wife Linda Austin both of Stillwater, OK, Amy Wallen and her husband Eber Lambert, both of San Diego, CA, also survive her.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Dietert Center, 451 Guadalupe Street, Kerrville, TX 78028.
