Mary Helen (Montgomery) Walker

July 22, 1921 ~ June 26, 2011

Services for Mary Helen Walker, 89, of Hastings, Nebraska were held at 11 p.m. Thursday, June 30 at All Saints Chapel at the Good Samaritan Village, Hastings with Pastor Dale Phillips officiating. Graveside services will follow on Friday, July 1 at 10:30 a.m. in Ridge Park Cemetery, Marshall, Missouri.

Born July 22, 1921 in Marietta, the 3rd daughter of David Lawrence Montgomery and Ethel Brintle Montgomery, she died Sunday, June 26, 2011 from congestive heart disease and associated complications at Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare, Hastings.

She had been a resident of The Villa Assisted Living Facility at Hastings Good Samaritan Village since 2006.

Mrs. Walker graduated from Marietta High School and then pursued a college degree at Oklahoma Baptist University in Oklahoma City. She married the love of her life, Emmett Walker on December 22, 1946 following his service as a paratrooper in the South Pacific during World War II. They lived in the communities of Dale, Marshall Junction, Missouri and St. Mary’s, Missouri from 1946 to 1959, where Emmett taught agriculture, farmed, and managed a livestock enterprise.

Over New Year’s of 1960 they moved to Marengo, Illinois where they raised their family. Mary Helen’s life was defined by her faith in her Lord, Jesus Christ, along with her lifelong struggle with deafness. She lost her hearing at the tender age of three due to a severe illness. Mary Helen was distinguished by her strength of character and determination she developed through her battles to overcome her loss of hearing. The deafness never defeated her, and her victory is now complete, as she is “Home” in paradise with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was so thankful that she lived to see and know her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary Helen was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother, Virgil; a sister, Myrtle; her husband, Emmett; and a daughter-in-law, Jill.

She is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, Paul Walker of Danvers, Illinois, and David and Linda Walker of Clay Center, Nebraska; grandchildren and spouses, Samantha Walker, Leslie Walker, Brianna Walker, Jeromy and Amy Doele and Jason and Jami Doele; great-grandchildren, Delaney, Karagen, beckett, Jackson and Poppy.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to The Villa Assisted Living Facility at the Good Samaritan Village in Mary Helen’s name.
