Richard “Dick” Lee Waggoner was born on Friday, January 13, 1933, the eighth child and fourth son of Chester and Ella McIntyre Waggoner. He was born on the family home three miles east of Billings, Oklahoma. He passed away March 6, 2020 at the age of 87. He attended Happy Star School, grades one through six. It was a one room school four miles east of Billings, Oklahoma, where his father also attended school. He attended Billings Public School seventh grade through grade twelve and graduated from Billings High School in 1951 with eighteen classmates. He attended Phillips University in Enid Oklahoma for one year on a Basketball and Baseball scholarship. He was an outstanding athlete and Enid News referred to him as “Dazzling Dick Waggoner” when he pitched a no hitter, then hit a home run to win a game.
He married Lois Ann McKeown September 4, 1952. They both attended Northern Oklahoma Junior college in Tonkawa, Oklahoma for one year. He entered the U.S. Army August 1953 and was released from active duty in August 1955, receiving an Honorable Discharge on August 31, 1961. He was captain of the 37th Engineer Combat Battalion’s Company C’s nine-man touch football team in Germany. He also played baseball for the 37th Engineer Group in Germany. He received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Central State College, Edmond, Oklahoma in 1958. He received the Central State College “Award of Merit” for Baseball for the years 1956-1957 and 1957-1958. He was the father of four children; daughter, Kim Renee; sons, Richard Dean, Mark Wayne and Michael Lee. He was a devoted father and involved in all aspects of his children’s lives. He taught History and Coached various sports in Pernell, Blanchard, Billings, Tonkawa, Moore, and Stillwater for 33 years retiring in 1991. He enjoyed his Students, years of teaching and coaching. After retirement he dabbled with antiques for 10 years with his brother Jim. The Family enjoyed the many auctions and the unique findings for family collections. With his wife, schnauzers, Rowdi and Shadow, traveled better than twenty thousand miles in a 30 ft. Winnebago. They traveled in 39 states, Washington D.C. and Canada. What an incredible journey. So much history and beauty. He was always constant in his love of family, John Wayne, New York Yankees, Oklahoma Sooners, and Dallas Cowboys.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lois; daughter, Kim Renee; brothers, Wilfred and wife Vicki, and Jim; brother-in-law, Mike McKeown; sister-in-law, Phyllis and husband Bob Hassle, Jaime and daughter Harley Houser. Many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by sons, Michael Lee in 1963, Richard Dean in 1995, Mark Wayne in 2019; parents, Chet and Ella Waggoner; two brothers, Charles and Max; three sisters, Bobbye, Mary Ruth and Donane; and a special niece, Kathy Robinson.
