Harry Darwyne Vickers III

Harry Darwyne Vickers III
March 1, 1933 ~ July 12, 2012 (age 79)

Harry Darwyne Vickers III
His journey through life ended July 14, 2012 (79)

Dar was born March 1, 1933 in Inglewood, California to Alice and Harry Vickers.

He lived a full life that included becoming an Eagle Scout, camping, fishing, and climbing Mt. McKinley.

He served his country with honor in the United States Navy.

Dar had a passion for learning, was awarded a PhD from USC.  He achieved success as a teacher, principal, district superintendent, and College professor.  Those who knew him best knew him as a problem solver who never saw a problem as a roadblock but merely a new challenge to overcome.  Dar traveled the world with the love of his life Sally and the two enjoyed many adventures, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends.  He loved good conversations, making people laugh, enjoying a good meal, and playing cards (often low low stakes poker).  He retired from being a professional educator in 1995 when he and Sally moved to Norman.  He brought with him his desire to learn and became an accomplished jewelry maker and continued to find creative ways to solve the problems that life would bring him and his family.

As he moves on, he leaves behind a grateful family; his adoring wife, Sally Vickers; his children, Mark Vickers, Stacy Johnson, Jennifer and Bradley Rose and seven beautiful grandchildren, Katrina Vickers and Markus Vickers, Michelle Oswald, Casey and Reagan Shirk, Dakota Rose and Stella Rose.  He also leaves behind many extended family members, nieces, nephews and friends.

In accordance with his wishes donations can be made to, Rob's Road to Recovery Ranch scholarship fund, 23899 State Highway 74, Purcell, OK 730800-6964, a substance abuse treatment facility where his son Mark works as a counselor and/or to St. Thomas More University Parish, 100 Stinson St., Norman, OK 73072 where he was a member of the congregation.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the kindness that was shown to Dar, especially Dr. Tom Merrill and Dr. Harken Adams, the staff at the Norman VA Center and Valir Hospice.

The family will have a come and go gathering at Sally's home starting at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, July 19, 2012.

Memorial Mass will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 20, 2012 at St. Thomas More University Parish.
