Gerald Loyd Vaughn, age 60, passed away Friday, March 5, 2021, at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House in Rock Hill, South Carolina, surrounded by family. The Home Going Service was held Tuesday, March 9, 2021, St. Giles Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, NC.
Born July 25, 1960, Muleshoe, Texas, Gerald was son of the late Loyd W. and the recently deceased Glenda R. Hicks Vaughn, who joined Gerald in Heaven just two days after his passing. Gerald was the first grandchild of the late Gifford R. Hicks and Mabel S. Hicks.
Gerald graduated Hereford High School, 1978, excelling in football, track and field. He attended West Texas A&M University, Canyon, Texas, and then moved to Charlotte, NC, involved in the broadcasting industry for INSP Network and the Weather Channel. He worked his way up from set builder, technical support and cameraman on several national programs to become an in-demand, award-winning satellite engineer who worked with top college and professional sports broadcasting crews for such prestigious companies and organizations as Jefferson-Pilot Sports, Raycom Sports, NASCAR, the National Football League, the Atlantic Coast Conference, Duke University, Wake Forest University and the Liberty University Flames Sports Network.
Through the decades in his chosen industry, he earned a well-deserved reputation as a dedicated, hard-working, highly professional and creative innovator, as well as a caring mentor to numerous up-and-coming sports broadcasters and technicians.
Surviving are his daughters, Rebekah Vaughn Wood (Mike) (NC) and Laurel E. Vaughn (TN), his brothers, Steve Vaughn (LeeAnn) (PA) and Travis Vaughn (OK), his grandchildren Lexi Wood and Maddi Wood, brothers Jim (Monica) Hicks (TX), Curtis Hicks (TX), Darryl (Karen) Hicks (TX), Wendell (Treva) Hicks (OK), and sister Sheila (Russ) Killingsworth (OK) and a host of loving family, friends and co-workers who will remember Gerald as a true, one-of-a-kind original.
