Gilbert “Duane” VanMeter
November 14, 1935 ~ April 20, 2021

Gilbert “Duane” VanMeter, 85, an avid farmer, father, husband and grandfather, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, April 20, 2021.

Gilbert “Duane” VanMeter was born on November 14, 1935 near Fonda, Oklahoma to Carl Gilbert and Thelma Mable (Blanka) VanMeter. Duane graduated from Canton High School in 1953. He went on to serve his country in the military and was stationed in North Korea from 1958 to 1960. Duane married Lua Ellen Hostler on October 9, 1960 at Denton, Texas. They were married for over 60 years. Duane worked several years for Pepsi Cola in Oklahoma City. Duane and Lua moved back to Canton from Midwest City in 1973 and in December of that year opened the Canton Farm Supply, which they operated together for over 40 years. He also worked many years at the Sinclair station in Canton.

Duane is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lua VanMeter; his children, Debbie Acord and husband Floyd, John Carlisle and wife Penny, Timothy Carlisle and wife Kathy, and Carl VanMeter and wife Misti; many beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and a host of other close family. Duane was preceded in death by his parents; son Gilbert Duane VanMeter; sisters Carol and Sue VanMeter.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 26, 2021 at the Canton Christian Church, 503 N. Washington Ave., Canton, OK with Keith Robinett officiating. Memorials may be made to Fountain Cemetery with Pierce Funeral Home serving as custodian at P.O. Box 36, Canton, OK 73724. Condolences may be made online at www.piercefuneralhomes.com.
