Harriet Beverly (Breckenridge) Turkington 88, retired OU professor, passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2012 in Norman.
Harriet was born in Grinnell, Iowa, Feb. 24, 1924 to Robert and Mildred Breckenridge. She graduated from Iowa State University with a B.S. (1946) and a Master of Science of Home Economics (1947). She married D. Barton Turkington on August 29, 1948. After teaching for one year at the University of Georgia, she moved to Norman where she was a professor of Home Economics at the University of Oklahoma for 39 years. Harriet was involved in PEO and was a founding member of Chapter DZ; an active supporter and served on the Board of Directors of the Norman Women's Resource Center; and was an active member of McFarlin United Methodist Church where she was instrumental in the formation and direction of the McFarlin Day Care Center and Kindergarten programs. In addition, over the years she served on numerous church committees and boards and was an advocate of many of the church's missions, music and Christian education programs.
Harriet is survived by her husband, D. Barton Turkington; three siblings; brother, Bruce Breckenridge and wife Mary Alice of Newtown, PA; sisters Eleanor Gates and husband Charles of Bryan, TX and Ester Blackburn and husband Alfred of Catonsville, MD; two children; son, Breck Turkington and wife Theresa; daughter, Alice Turkington Brown and husband David all of Norman. Five grandchildren, Brian Wines, and wife Tracey of Norman; Keith Wines and wife Julie of Wichita, KS; Amanda Brown of Wagoner; Bennett Turkington and Brooke Turkington of Norman; and seven great grandchildren; Kaden and Cassidy of Norman; Madeleine and Keylan of Wichita; and Makaela, Brycen, and Natalie of Wagoner.
Memorial services will be held 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church.
The family suggests memorial donations in honor of Harriet can be made to the McFarlin United Methodist Church Foundation, P.O. Box 6390, Norman, OK 73070 or charity of their choice.
