Miriam Joyce (Phillips) Tuller

Celebration of life services for Miriam Joyce Tuller will be on Tuesday, September 12th from 6 - 9PM at the American Legion in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Interment will be at the Traer Cemetery in Traer, Kansas. Miriam, age 88, of Guthrie, Oklahoma, passed away at her home on September 7th, 2017. Miriam was born February 4th, 1929 at Saint Catherine's Hospital in McCook, Nebraska. Miriam was the third child of Hardy Lee & Lucy Irene (Silvers) Phillips. 

At the age of 13, Miriam committed herself to God & was baptized in the Traer Methodist Church. During World War II, Miriam's father served in the US Navy. The family moved New York City & Miriam attended Curtis High School on Staten Island her junior year & start of senior year. She returned to Kansas to attend the funeral of her grandfather Robert A. Silvers, who had been killed in the Curtis Train Accident. 

Miriam finished her Senior High School year, graduating Decator County Oberlin High School class of 1946. In the fall of 1946, she moved with her family to McCook Nebraska. For the next 17 years, Miriam was employed as a bookkeeper. She also worked for 10 years for the City of McCook & retired as City Clerk on September 30th, 1963.

On April 13th, 1949 Miriam was united in marriage to Delman Tuller, who served in the US Navy during World War II. Delman was a plumber and electrician by trade. Miriam and Delman celebrated 27 years together; two children were born of this union, Stephen Gene Tuller & Barbara Anne (Tuller) DeBolt. Delman was stricken with cancer in early 1975 & died at 51, February 11th, 1976 at the Veterans Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. Miriam went back to work; she took a course to become a nurse aid & worked at the community hospital, the Electric Hose Plant, & part time in McCook Supper Clubs over a period of 25 years. She also kept books for her mother's and daughters antique shops over the years. In 1996, Miriam became a full-time caregiver for her mother, until her mother's death on May 8th in 2007 at the age of 96.

From 2001 until 2008, Miriam managed a hotel in Hays, Kansas. An injury at work confined her to a wheelchair for the balance of her life. Miriam enjoyed Volunteer Work & telling stories of her years participating in her children's school & church activities. Miriam was a 64 year member of the Auxiliary to Bernard Elbert VFW Post 1652 of McCook Nebraska & president. She was a long-time member of the fraternal order of the Eagle's Auxiliary 2769 of McCook, Nebraska & served as their president in 1991. In Miriam's spare time, she kept her hands busy leaving a trail of paper roses everywhere she lived and was fondly known as "The Rose Lady."

Miriam was preceded in death by her husband, Delman, her son, Stephen Gene on March 4th, 2004, her parents & her grandparents, Robert & Katie Silvers of Traer, Kansas, John Logan & Francis Ethel Phillips of Adamsville, Tennessee, four sisters; Dorothy, Darlene, infant 12-28-1928, Jean-Marie infant 12-14-1930, Jessie Lee Waterman, Santa Ana, California, 12-19-1994, Mildred Lois Grafton, Clearlake, California 12-18-1998. Three brother-in-laws, Dane Tuller, Cambridge, Nebraska, Douglas Tuller, Willard, Missouri, Rex Waterman, Santa Ana, California, Two sister-in-laws, Roxie Tuller, McCook Nebraska, Vera Mae Tuller, Willard, Missouri, Two nephews, Randall Wayne Tuller, Lebanon, Nebraska & Garett Lee Waganer, McCook, Nebraska. Two Aunts: Eveleyn Silvers, Traer, Kansas & Lucy Silvers, Traer, Kansas. Special cousin, Levan Rae Mayfield, Tennessee. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Anne & her husband Leonard DeBolt of Edmond, Oklahoma. Three grandchildren: Joshua & Brandi DeBolt, Zachary DeBolt, Edmond, OK, Angela Lea & Darrel Morris, Brooklet, GA. Two great-grandchildren, twins Emerson & Isabelle DeBolt. Daughter-in-law, Jenny Tuller, Las Vegas, NV. Special cousins, Dennis Owsley, Carryville, Tennessee, Johnnie Conner, New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Miriam is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great-grandchildren, & step-grandchildren. 

In respect for Miriam's wishes she has been cremated and will be laid to rest by her husband, Delman, in the Traer, Kansas cemetery, following the celebration in Guthrie, Oklahoma. 

Smith-Gallo Funeral Home is in charge of Miriam's burial & ashes of her mother, who died May 8th, 2000, will be entered in the Traer, Kansas cemetery at the same time along with a small urn of some of her son's ashes, who was buried in the Dorchester Memory Gardens in Summerville, South Carolina on June 17, 2004 by his wife Jennie Tuller. Burial will be held at a later date.
