Michael  Stephan “Mike”Treps
July 30, 1933 ~ December 23, 2014 (age 81)

Michael “Mike” Stephan Treps, of Norman was born July 30, 1933, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Michael and Emma Treps, and was the oldest of three children.  He passed from this life on Tuesday, December 23 at the age of 81.

Mike graduated from Dallas North High School in 1951 and received his BA in Radio- Speech at the University of Oklahoma in 1956. 

Mike started his career as a radio broadcaster in Shawnee, Oklahoma (1957-1962)  and then had stints in both Hutchinson and Pittsburg, Kansas. He  transitioned to television as the Sports Director in Hastings, Nebraska (KAHSA 1963-1966) and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (WKY 1966-1972).  He continued his career at OU as the Director of Media Information (1972-1979), Sports Information Director (1979-1992) and Special Assistant to the Athletic Director (1992-1998).  Over a 24 year span Mike also did play by play and color for 282 OU      football games.  He was part of 4 national championships, 3 in football and 1 in baseball.  He was the play by play voice for OU baseball for over 1,000 games in 18 years.  He worked as a basketball public announcer for 21 years at OU and was   Official Scorer for the Oklahoma City Redhawks for 6 years and for 3 years did both play by play and color for the team.  He took part in countless sports radio shows and spoke at many events.

Mike received multiple awards and honors.   One of his most memorable was when the media room in L. Dale Mitchell Park was named after him in 2003. 

After his retirement from the University of Oklahoma in 1998, Mike enjoyed many rounds of golf and his Wednesday men’s lunch group at the Trails Golf Club. He liked traveling and watching his grandchildren's sporting events.  He loved visiting Chicago yearly to watch his beloved Cubs and had many memorable Friday nights watching Midwest City Bomber football games with his family.  He delighted in Sunday night dinners with grandchildren Katie and Garrett.  Mike had an incredible memory for all things sports related, was an avid reader and had a keen interest in American history.

He is predeceased by his parents, Michael and Emma Treps and his brother  Lieutenant Donald Treps. 

He is survived by his sister Janice Hokenson and her husband Frank of Punta Gorda, FL, his daughters Robin Murray (Dennis) of     Edmond, Wendy Foster (David) of Richardson, TX, Tracy Treps (Steve Huff) of College Station, TX ; grandchildren Megan Ray, Katie Foster, Erin Murray, Garrett Foster, Dakota Murray, Jett and Tatum Huff.

Mike loved his family, the Chicago Cubs, and the Oklahoma Sooners.  We will miss his smile, laughter, and sense of humor.
